Documentation Documentation for Template:RQ:Tanach. [edit]
This page contains usage information, categories, interwiki links and other content describing the template.

This template cites the Hebrew Tanach as a source of a quotation. It links the Hebrew reference to Hebrew Wikisource. For supported JPS editions, it also links the specified English translation on Sefaria.

Usage

[edit]

Use the full English book name, an approved abbreviation, or a compatibility numeric code:

{{RQ:Tanach|Genesis|2|3–4|tsrc=JPS1917
|passage=...
|translation=...}}

Parameters

[edit]
|1=
Required. The book, using an exact full English name, approved abbreviation, or documented numeric code from the table below. Inputs are case-sensitive. Unlisted abbreviations, dotted forms, Roman-numeral forms, Hebrew names, and alternative titles are not accepted.
|2=
Required. A positive integer within the selected book.
|3=
Optional. A verse number or range. A single verse links to its Hebrew Wikisource anchor. Simple verse ranges also form part of a Sefaria link; more complex verse displays are preserved but are not linked to Sefaria.
|lang=
Optional. Use |lang=arc when the quoted passage is Aramaic. The default is Hebrew.
|tsrc=
Optional. The source of the supplied English translation; see #Translation sources.
|text= or |passage=
The quotation text.
|t= or |translation=
A translation of the quotation text.
|tr= or |transliteration=

For compatibility, free-form source text is still accepted. Values resembling an invalid JPS tag produce an error rather than being treated as free text.

Deprecated ambiguous JPS value

[edit]

|tsrc=JPS is deprecated but remains accepted; it does not identify which JPS translation supplied the quotation. It therefore does not generate a version-specific Sefaria link. Pages using it are tracked through Wiktionary:Tracking/RQ:Tanach/tsrc/JPS, and editors see a preview-only warning asking them to verify the translation and replace it with JPS1917, JPS1985, or JPS2023.

Do not replace JPS mechanically: first compare the supplied English text with the editions.

Historical translation-source parameters

[edit]

To keep historical revisions readable, the template continues to recognize older calls that place a translation-source tag in |t= or |tr=. This usage is deprecated, tracked, and accompanied by a preview-only warning. In current calls, put the translation edition in |tsrc=; |t= and |tr= have their standard meanings of translation and transliteration.
