German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German ungestüeme n or f, from Old High German ungistuomi n and ungistuomī f, nominalisations of the adjective ungistuomi, whence modern ungestüm.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈʊnɡəˌʃtyːm/, [ˈʔʊn.ɡəˌʃtyːm], [ˈʔʊŋ.ɡə-]
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Ungestüm n or (uncommon, proscribed) m (strong, genitive Ungestüms or Ungestümes, no plural)

  1. impetuosity, impetuousness

Usage notes[edit]

  • The only gender recognised by most dictionaries is the neuter. However, since the word occurs most often in prepositional expressions in the dative case (where masculine and neuter are indistinguishable) the masculine is also found in edited texts. In archaic usage, the word may be feminine.
