Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Bengali Adjective Froms

[edit]

Isn't অংসলা an adjective form? If so, then the headword ought to be as follows: {{head|bn|adjective form|g=f}} --Apisite (talk) 10:06, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Apisite Hello! Thanks for monitoring my edits. I was wondering how to deal with Bengali masculine and feminine adjectives. However, I have added this template to the entry অংসলা. Do I need to describe the senses as I did in অংসল? Meghmollar2017 (talk) 10:29, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
P.S. It's not a non-lemma form. It's an independent adjective derived from Sanskrit rules. Meghmollar2017 (talk) 10:33, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

জ/য

[edit]

Hi, the letters জ and য can be transliterated as either "j" or "z" (particularly in, but not exclusively, Eastern Bengal). SalamAlayka (talk) 13:58, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@SalamAlayka, The thing is not about Eastern Bengali pronunciation, but transliteration. Standardized Bengali (which is to transliterated) has no distinct transliteration for জ and য according to the documentation. Meghmollar2017 (talk) 16:33, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciations of চাল

[edit]

The pronunciation for Etymologies 1 & 2 is different from that for Etymology 3 . But distinction has not been shown in the relevant page .

How should we clarify it on the wiki-page ? 2400:C600:3411:496D:1:0:1F95:C1E8 00:41, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

I do not see any difference according to Bangla Academi books. However, I see you have reverted my edits in the entry. The etymology part should be self-consistent and should not refer to another entry. Meghmollar2017 (talk) 12:01, 19 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

নববর্ষ

[edit]

Could you add one valid quotation from a durable medium to the entry at least? Bengali is a WDL, so it requires one such quote for it to be featured as foreign word of the day. References only count for LDLs and extinct languages. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 16:26, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Lingo Bingo Dingo, I have added one. Can you please check? Meghmollar2017 (talk) 17:40, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. It looks good. Are the senses 2 and 3 distinct? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 20:18, 2 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Lingo Bingo Dingo, as per the examples they seem to be distinct. Sense 2 represents the start of the year, maybe a day or any part of the day. But sense 3 defines the particular day as in the Sarala Devi's writing. Meghmollar2017 (talk) 07:26, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Okay, it has been set. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 20:47, 4 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
