Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary!

Please read our Entry layout page so people won't have to spend time fixing your edits. Thanks! Chuck Entz (talk) 00:50, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

creating new entries in Chinese[edit]

Hi and welcome. To create a new entry in Chinese, please use the following template:

{{subst:zh-new||}}

For example, for a noun:

{{subst:zh-new||[[apple]]}}

Or a verb:

{{subst:zh-new|v|to [[eat]]}}

Remember to start with the traditional form (繁体字) first, then add {{subst:zh-new||}} to the simplified which will automatically create a soft redirect. Let me know if you have any questions. ---> Tooironic (talk) 00:40, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help. and for new entries in Japanese. Can You help me? Shiromura Nekomao (talk) 20:44, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't speak Japanese. Try User talk:Suzukaze-c. ---> Tooironic (talk) 01:00, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a guide for Japanese: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Wiktionary:About_Japanese . I noticed you haven't been editing in a while and I understand it may be that you may be worrying about whether you are making valuable contributions or if your edits are going to have to be cleaned up eventually by an admin. One of the most important rules is that you make sure your definitions are not plagiarized copies of definitions you've found published somewhere online or in printed materials you may have. This guide should be of help to you in formatting your additions, although you might find some information may be out of date. If unsure, I recommend asking User talk:Suzukaze-c and User talk:Eirikr. I'm still learning the ropes here too, so, although you may ask me, I may defer to one of them if uncertain. 馬太阿房 (talk) 18:16, 20 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
