Welcome
[edit]Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.
If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:
- Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
- Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
- Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
- If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
- If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
- Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (
~~~~
) which automatically produces your username and timestamp. - You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.
Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Vininn126 (talk) 18:47, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, buddy. I'll read the Wikterature. Thyself be knowne (talk) 18:49, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
Non-trivial definitions
[edit]To deliver value to users we need our definitions to be non-trivial. That is, don't force users to click through to multiple entries, especially alternative or inflected forms, to get to information not obvious from the morphology of the term. Compare the current content of pressirostral to what you contributed. DCDuring (talk) 13:05, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- @DCDuring The extra information including bustards, plovers, and cariamas is non-trivial, indeed. Thanks for adding it! I was looking for what those birds would be in modern taxonomic terms, but found nothing conclusive, so decided to leave it at that. The Onelook reference is useful too, I'll add it as necessary Thyself be knowne (talk) 17:57, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- @DCDuring Why did you change the Webster 1913 reference to a Century reference? This page shows nothing! Thyself be knowne (talk) 18:00, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- @DCDuring How about oreographic? That saves 2 clicks! Thyself be knowne (talk) 18:14, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- re: Century. I believe that users are capable of clicking through on, say, the JPEG link. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but Century 1911 is way better than MW 1913. It might be possible to develop a template that displayed this, but it is beyond my capability.
- @DCDuringSure, I agree the Century is better, but it was a bit funny/contradictory when you said don't force users to click through to multiple entries and then users are capable of clicking through on, say, the JPEG link! Thyself be knowne (talk) 06:36, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
- Life is full of trade-offs. DCDuring (talk) 14:40, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
- [[oreographic]] looks good to me. DCDuring (talk) 18:38, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, and don't hesitate with any other comments/feedback/corrections, it's all part of the learning process Thyself be knowne (talk) 06:36, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
- @DCDuring Why did you change the Webster 1913 reference to a Century reference? This page shows nothing! Thyself be knowne (talk) 18:00, 10 June 2023 (UTC)
Deletions
[edit]When deleting e.g. verb disslander you must also delete inflections like disslandering. If you can't do that, ask an admin or wait for admin to close RFVs. Thanks. Equinox ◑ 12:30, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, that is a good tip. Sorry, I was editing in quite a gung-ho manner. Thyself be knowne (talk) 13:33, 11 June 2023 (UTC)
