16th century, from Latin victualia, perhaps following the Late Middle High German vitalie, from Old French vitaille, itself from the Latin.

- Now not generally understood and restricted to highly literary style (even then often with a somewhat ironic tone). Still widely known is the Viktualienmarkt of Munich.
