Welcome to the English language Wiktionary, a collaborative project to produce a free-content multilingual dictionary.
Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included.
Wiktionary is a wiki, which means that you can edit it, and all the content is licensed under the GNU Free Documentation License. Before you contribute, you may wish to read through some of our Help pages, and bear in mind that we do things quite differently from other wikis. In particular we have strict layout conventions and inclusion criteria. Learn how to start a page, how to edit entries, experiment in the sandbox and visit our Community Portal to see how you can participate in the development of Wiktionary.

Wiktionaries in other languagesThis is the English Wiktionary: it aims to describe all words of all languages using definitions and descriptions in English. For example, see (deprecated template usage) dictionnaire (a French word). In order to find a French definition of that word, you would visit the equivalent page in the French Wiktionary. For more information, see our Multilingual coordination page and Multilingual statistics. 10,000+: Afrikaans • Template:Arab script (Arabic) • Brezhoneg (Breton) • Template:Cyrl script (Bulgarian) • Nederlands (Dutch) • Eesti (Estonian) • Suomi (Finnish) • Galego (Galician) • Deutsch (German) • Magyar (Hungarian) • Íslenska (Icelandic) • Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian) • Italiano (Italian) • Template:Jpan script (Japanese) • Template:Hang script (Korean) • Kurdî / Template:Arab script (Kurdish) • Limburgs (Limburgish) • Lietuvių (Lithuanian) • Norsk (Norwegian) • Template:Arab script (Persian) • Português (Portuguese) • Română (Romanian) • Template:Cyrl script (Serbian) • Sicilianu (Sicilian) • Español (Spanish) • Svenska (Swedish) • తెలుగు (Telugu) • Volapük 1,000+: Shqip (Albanian) • Հայերեն (Armenian) • Asturianu (Asturian) • Azərbaycan (Azeri) • Català (Catalan) • Corsu (Corsican) • Hrvatski (Croatian) • Česká (Czech) • Dansk (Danish) • Esperanto • Frysk (West Frisian) • Kalaallisut (Greenlandic) • Avañe'ẽ (Guaraní) • עברית (Hebrew) • हिन्दी (Hindi) • Interlingua • Gaeilge (Irish) • Kaszëbsczi (Kashubian) • Template:Cyrl script (Kazakh) • ລາວ (Lao) • Latina (Latin) • Bahasa Melayu (Malay) • മലയാളം (Malayalam) • Bân-lâm-gú (Min Nan) • Occitan • Englisc (Old English) • Plattdüütsch (Low Saxon) • Simple English • Slovenčina (Slovak) • Slovenščina (Slovene) • Obersorbisch (Upper Sorbian) • seSotho (Southern Sotho) • Kiswahili (Swahili) • Tatarça / Татарча (Tatar) • ไทย (Thai) • Template:Cyrl script (Ukrainian) • اردو (Urdu) 100+: አማርኛ (Amharic) • Aragonés (Aragonese) • Euskara (Basque) • Беларуская (Belarusian) • Bosanski (Bosnian) • ភាសាខ្មែរ (Cambodian) • ᏣᎳᎩ (Cherokee) • Føroyskt (Faroese) • ქართული (Georgian) • ગુજરાતી (Gujarati) • Interlingue • ಕನ್ನಡ (Kannada) • Ikinyarwanda (Kinyarwanda) • Template:Cyrl script (Kyrgyz) • Latviešu (Latvian) • Македонски (Macedonian) • मराठी (Marathi) • Монгол (Mongolian) • Nahuatl • ਪੰਜਾਬੀ (Panjabi) • Runa Simi (Quechua) • Gàidhlig (Scottish Gaelic) • سنڌي (Sindhi) • Basa Sunda (Sundanese) • Tagalog • ትግርኛ (Tigrinya) • Xitsonga (Tsonga) • تركمن / Туркмен (Turkmen) • Oyghurque / ئۇيغۇرچە (Uyghur) • Cymraeg (Welsh) • Wollof (Wolof) • ייִדיש (Yiddish) • isiZulu (Zulu) | |||||||||||
