Etymology[edit]

The atonal Hanyu Pinyin romanization of the Mandarin 徐匯徐汇 (Xúhuì, literally Xu Confluence), a clipping of 徐家匯徐家汇 (Xújiāhuì, literally Xu Family Confluence) in reference to the prominence of the Xu family in the area during the Ming dynasty and the previous junction of several streams and canals in the district's Xujiahui neighborhood.
