From Old Galician and Old Portuguese azeyte (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Andalusian Arabic, from Arabic زَيْت (zayt, “oil, edible or for combustion”). Cognate with Portuguese azeite, Spanish aceite, and Hebrew זית (záyit, “olive”).
