From Old Welsh atar, from Proto-Celtic *ɸetnos (compare Old Irish ette (feather)), from Proto-Indo-European *péth₂-r̥ (obl. *pth₂-éns) (compare English feather, Latin penna). Related to edn, adain, ehedeg.
