Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic [Term?], borrowed from Proto-Germanic *ainagaz (sole) (from *ainaz (one)), preserving the older meaning seen in the Latin cognate unicus (unique). Cognate with Estonian ainus, Votic ainago, Ingrian ainava, Livonian āinagi, Ludian ainag.
