Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish آلت طرف (alt taraf, the place or part lower down; the sequel of a thing, continuation),[1][2] from آلت (alt) and طرف (taraf),[3][4] equivalent to alt (lower, below, bottom) +‎ taraf (side, face) +‎ (possessive suffix), literally the lower or bottom side.
