English[edit]

Verb[edit]

an't

  1. (dialect, archaic) amn't; am not
  2. (dialect, archaic, in non-rhotic dialects) aren't; are not
  3. (dialect, archaic) isn't; is not
  4. (Northern England, dialect) haven't; hasn't

Usage notes[edit]

In modern English, an't has been supplanted by aren't in the phrase “aren’t I?”, though in nonstandard usage it continues with a vowel change as ain't.
