From a Vulgar Latin *advitiāre (accustom, habituate, familiarize), from Latin vitium. Compare Italian avvezzare, Portuguese vezar, avezar, Provençal Occitan avezar, envezar, Catalan avesar, cf. also Romanian învăța.
