Etymology[edit]

From Ottoman Turkish عذاب(azāb, pain, torment, torture), from Arabic عَذَاب(ʿaḏāb), probably via Persian عذاب('azâb). An early Turkic borrowing akin to Karakhanid [script needed] (ˁaẕāb), Bashkir ғазап (ğazap), Kazakh азап (azap), Kyrgyz азап (azap), Tatar газап (ğazap), Uzbek azob.
