[edit]Sino-Vietnamese word from 半島, composed of 半 (“half-”) and 島 (“island”), Japanese 半島 (hantō) which is calqued from Dutch halfeiland (literally “halfisland”), equivalent to bán- (“half-”) + đảo (“island”).
