From Proto-Vietic *pəɲʔ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *paɲʔ; cognates include Muong pảnh, Khmer បាញ់ (bañ) and Pacoh pánh. Compare Proto-Austronesian *panaq (to shoot), Vietnamese (crossbow).
