  1. Used other than with a figurative or idiomatic meaning: see back,‎ into.
  2. (idiomatic) To rely upon another team's loss in order to advance to the post-season, especially in the context of one's own team's loss.
    The 2006 St. Louis Cardinals backed into the playoffs.
