From Proto-Albanian *ballā-, from Pre-Proto-Albanian *balnā-, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰólh₁neh₂- (the white one), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (shining, white).[1] Compare Latin flāgrāre (to burn), Old Church Slavonic бѣлъ (bělŭ, white), Lithuanian balnas (pale).
