Although there is a long tradition of usage guides recommending that based on not be used disjunctively, it is now so ingrained in idiomatic English that attempting to purge it, by always replacing it with whichever alternative wording is synonymous in each instance while simultaneously not altering the tone of the writing, can be quite challenging and may feel like a lost cause to those tasked with doing it. The same is true of disjunctive use of due to.
