Etymology[edit]

From German Bestie, Italian bestia, Latin bestia.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): [ˈbesto]
  • Audio:
    (file)
  • Rhymes: -esto
  • Hyphenation: bes‧to

Noun[edit]

besto (accusative singular beston, plural bestoj, accusative plural bestojn)

  1. animal
    Synonym: animalo
  2. nonhuman animal
  3. beast

Usage notes[edit]

Since the very beginning of Esperanto, besto has meant any member of the animal kingdom, including humans. However, because many Esperanto speakers interpret it as meaning "non-human animal", animalo was coined to explicitly mean any animal including humans.
