Pronunciation

Etymology 1

[edit]

Perhaps from Proto-Vietic *pes, representing a dialect where coda *s, *r, *l have merged with /n/, and *e diphthongized to /iə/. If so, cognate with, and have superseded bể as the common word for sea.

Compare về, from *veːr, which is represented in some North Central dialects as viền.
