[edit]From Middle Dutch blosen, further etymology unclear, but ultimately from Proto-Germanic *blus-, perhaps related to *blasį̄ (“blaze”).
Cognates include Middle Low German blosen, West Frisian bloazje, Old Swedish blusa, and with umlaut also Middle Low German blöschen, Old English blȳsian.
