From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese britar, from Suevic [Term?] *briutan,[1] from Proto-Germanic *brutōjaną (to chop, to fragment) or Proto-Germanic *breutaną, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰrewd- (to break). Compare Old English brēotan and English brit.[2]
