[edit]From cờ (“board game with pieces or tokens”) + 將 (“to check”, SV: tướng), partial calque of Chinese 將棋 / 将棋 (jiàngqí, SV: tướng kì). Unrelated to 將 (“general, a piece in xiangqi”, SV: tướng).
Attested in the Dictionarium anamitico-latinum (1772 manuscript), listed alongside cờ vây, cờ tiên and cờ song lục as various board games.
