Etymology

From cờ (board game with pieces or tokens) +‎ (to check, SV: tướng), partial calque of Chinese 將棋 / 将棋 (jiàngqí, SV: tướng kì). Unrelated to (general, a piece in xiangqi, SV: tướng).

Attested in the Dictionarium anamitico-latinum (1772 manuscript), listed alongside cờ vây, cờ tiên and cờ song lục as various board games.
