From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese capela, from Medieval Latin, Late Latin cappella (little cloak; chapel), diminutive of cappa (cloak, cape). Cognate with Portuguese capela, Spanish capilla, Catalan capella, Occitan capèla, French chapelle, Italian cappella and Romanian capelă.
