From Proto-Germanic *kasą, *kazą ‎(vessel, container). Second element possibly Old English -ere, in same sense as container. Cognate with Old High German chastanāri ‎(encloser), Old High German kasto ‎(box, case) (Modern German Kasten), Dutch kast ‎(cupboard, case), Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐍃 ‎(kas, vessel, container), Old Norse ker ‎(vessel, container).
