From Proto-Germanic *kasą, *kazą (vessel, container). Second element possibly Old English -ere, in same sense as container. Cognate with Old High German chastanāri (encloser), Old High German kasto (box, case) (Modern German Kasten), Dutch kast (cupboard, case), Gothic 𐌺𐌰𐍃 (kas, vessel, container), Old Norse ker (vessel, container).
