From Late Latin catēchūmenus, from Ancient Greek κατηχούμενος (katēkhoúmenos, being instructed), present participle passive of κατηχέω (katēkhéō, I sound through, instruct orally), from κατά (katá, down) + ἠχή (ēkhḗ, sound, noise).
