From Proto-Slavic *cěditi, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *(s)koiʔd-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)koyd-.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian skíesti (to separate, dilute), Lithuanian šķiêst (scatter, spill, cut).

Indo-European cognates include Proto-Germanic *skītaną (to defecate, to shit), Latin scindō, Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō, I split, cleave), Welsh cwys, Sanskrit छिनत्ति (chinatti).
