Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese *çenoyra, from Old Spanish çanahoria, from Andalusian Arabic *سَفُنَّارْيَة (*safunnārya), from Arabic إِسْفَنَارِيَّة (ʔisfanāriyya), from Ancient Greek σταφυλίνη ἀγρία (staphulínē agría, wild carrot).

Cognate with Galician cenoria, Mirandese cenoura, Asturian and Spanish zanahoria (and its descendants into other languages), Maltese zunnarija, Catalan safanòria, Basque azenario and Libyan Arabic سفنّاريّة (sfənnāriyya).
