[edit]Metathesis of Old Spanish çahanoria, from Andalusian Arabic *سَفُنَّارْيَة (*safunnārya), from Arabic إِسْفَنَارِيَّة (ʔisfanāriyya) (compare Libyan Arabic سفنّاريّة (sfənnāriyya) and Maltese zunnarija), from Ancient Greek σταφυλίνη ἀγρία (staphulínē agría, “wild carrot”).
Cognate to Asturian zanahoria, Catalan safanòria, Galician cenoria, Portuguese cenoura, Mirandese cenoura and Basque azenario.
