From centi- (hundredth) +‎ -some ((noun combining form) chromosome).

  1. One hundredth part of the length of a chromosome

Usage notes[edit]

Used in gene mapping to identify the position of genes on the chromosome, and typically followed by a number indicating the position of the gene: "The pathogenicity of Salmonella is located at centisome 63 of its chromosome."
