From Old Galician-Portuguese cervo, from Latin cervus (deer, stag), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱr̥h₂wós, from *ḱerh₂- (horn). Cognate with Galician cervo, Spanish ciervo, Catalan cérvol, Occitan cèrvi, French cerf, Italian cervo and Romanian cerb.
