Etymology
Of unknown origin. Possibly from Turkish zabata or Tatar čabata (“overshoes”), ultimately either from Turkish çapıt, çaput (“patchwork, tatters”), from Old Turkic čapmaq (“to slap on”), or of Iranian origin, from Khwarezmian čābātān (“thick boots”), cognate with modern Persian چپت (čapat).
