From Old Galician-Portuguese companneiro (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from compaña (troop, army) +‎ -eiro (-er); from Late Latin companiō, a calque from Germanic: compare Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌻𐌰𐌹𐌱𐌰 (gahlaiba, messmate), Old High German galeipo, from Proto-Germanic *ga- (together) + *hlaibaz (loaf, bread).
