From Old Galician-Portuguese divida, devida, deveda, from Latin dēbita, plural of dēbitum, from dēbitus (owed), from dēbeō (I owe), from + habeō (I have), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeh₁bʰ- (to grab, to take). Doublet of débito.
