From Old Occitan [Term?], from Latin laxāre, present active infinitive of laxō, with a change of initial consonant (probably from influence of the preposition de. See also the form laissar, which did not undergo this change. Compare Catalan deixar, Galician and Portuguese deixar, Spanish dejar, French laisser.
