Inherited from Vulgar Latin *discantāre, from Latin dis- + cantō. Compare Aromanian discãntu, discãntari, Friulian discjantâ (disenchant, awaken, make wiser), Venetian descantar (wake up, sharpen up); cf. also French déchanter.
