Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese despreçar, des- +‎ preçar, from preciar (to price, to hold dear), from Latin pretium (price), from Proto-Indo-European *preti- (back); or possibly through a Vulgar Latin *dispretiāre. Compare English depreciate, also Spanish despreciar, Italian disprezzare.
