From Middle Welsh elain / elein, from Old Welsh [Term?], from Proto-Brythonic [Term?], from Proto-Celtic *elanī, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-en-i- / *h₁él-h₁n-ih₂, from the Proto-Indo-European root *h₁el- (“yellow-brown”). For cognates see *h₁el-.
