From Proto-Celtic *olīnā (“elbow; angle”), from Proto-Indo-European *Heh₃l- (“to bend”). Cognate with Welsh elin, Breton ilin, Scottish Gaelic uileann, Irish uillinn; non-Celtic cognates include Latin ulna, Ancient Greek ὠλένη (ōlénē).
