From Spanish español or from Middle French espaignol, from Old French espagneul or espaigneul, borrowed from Old Occitan espaignol, espainol, from a Vulgar Latin *Hispaniolus, from Latin hispānus, from Hispania. See also épagneul (“spaniel”).
