Etymology

Coined by British biologist Richard Dawkins in 1982 in his book The Extended Phenotype.

extended phenotype (plural extended phenotypes)

  1. (biology) The phenotype extended to include effects that a gene has on its environment. (ex.: beaver dams, ant colonies, a caddis fly's protective cases, etc.)
