Etymology

From Middle English forsayen (to renounce), from Old English forseċġan (to accuse, accuse falsely, slander, speak about, discourse on), equivalent to for- +‎ say. Cognate with German versagen (to refuse, deny), Swedish försäga (to misspeak, say too much). More at for-, say.
