[edit]gém (“heron or spoonbill”) + -es (adjective-forming suffix), the shape and movement of the bird metaphorically transferred to the senses “drawbridge, (boom) barrier”, “hoist”, “sweep” (of a well), becoming the basis of the adjective, which mostly exists today in the compound given below.[1]
