Etymology 1[edit]

Unknown. Maybe related to French faire gaffe (pay attention), or German gaffen (to stare).

Possibly related to the Andalusian Arab scholar and ophtalmologist of the 12th century Muhammad ibn Aslam Al-Ghafiqi, an ophtalmologist. Eyeglasses “gafas” were named after him. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
