Inherited from Old Spanish guarañón (stud, stallion), from Proto-Germanic *wranjonis, accusative of *wranjo, cognate of Dutch ruin and regional German Raune. Compare Portuguese garanhão, Occitan garanhon, and Old French gareignun.
