Etymology[edit]
From Middle Dutch gouwe, gauwe (“quick, fast, hasty”), alteration of gâ, from Old Dutch gā, from Proto-Germanic *ganhuz, *ganhwaz (“sudden, quick”), of unknown origin. Cognate with Low German gau (“quick, fast”), German jäh (“sudden, abrupt”). More at gay.
