From Proto-West Germanic *gakeusan, from Proto-Germanic *gakeusaną. Equivalent to ġe- +‎ ċēosan. Cognate with Old High German gikiosan, Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌺𐌹𐌿𐍃𐌰𐌽 (gakiusan).
